Concert in Harmony

L'objectif de ce concert est d'explorer comment la musique peut transcender les barrières linguistiques et culturelles, en favorisant la compréhension et l'unité à travers l'expression artistique.

The traditional Iranian setar—a plucked lute central to Persian classical music—serves as a profound ambassador of Iranian musical heritage when performed. Its delicate sound, rich ornamentation, and intricate microtonal scales introduce audiences to the radif, the collection of melodies foundational to Persian classical music, which has been preserved and transmitted orally over generations. The setar's expressiveness, often likened to human speech, evokes deep emotional and spiritual connections, creating an intimate and meditative atmosphere that captures the essence of Iranian cultural identity.

In the context of a performance in France, this instrument's tonal subtleties and improvisational nature echo traditional French folk music practices, which similarly embrace individual expression through improvisation and melodic variation. The setar's capacity for taqsim (improvised melodic sections) resonates with the spirit of French musical forms like musette or Breton folk music, where a strong improvisational thread is woven through the performances.

Furthermore, the setar and its repertoire, deeply connected to Sufi mysticism, mirrors the cultural importance of spirituality in French classical and folk traditions, such as the Catholic liturgical chant or the pastoral themes in regional music. Both traditions emphasize the power of music as a conduit for transcendence and emotional expression. This shared value fosters a cultural dialogue through music, creating a bridge of coexistence between Iranian and French heritages.

In performances that combine the setar with French instruments or musical sensibilities, a dynamic interplay can emerge, highlighting the universal themes of human experience—such as longing, nature, and spirituality—expressed through differing yet complementary musical languages. The sensitivity of both traditions to nuance and emotion enriches a cross-cultural dialogue, promoting mutual understanding and shared artistic exploration.

This fusion underscores the role of music as a unifying force, transcending geographic and cultural boundaries, and fostering coexistence through the universal language of sound.
